    LEAN MANUFACTURING TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES IN THE PROCESS INDUSTRY WITH A FOCUS ON STEEL

    This research addresses the application of lean manufacturing concepts to the continuous production/ process sector with a focus on the steel industry. The goal of this research is to investigate how lean manufacturing tools can be adapted from the discrete to the continuous manufacturing environment, and to evaluate their benefits on a specific application instance. Although the process and discrete industry share several common characteristics, there are areas where they are very different. Both manufacturing settings have overlap, but at the extreme, each has its unique characteristics. This research attempts to identify commonalities between discrete and continuous manufacturing where lean techniques from the discrete side are directly applicable. The ideas are tested on a large steel manufacturing company (referred to as ABS). Value stream mapping is used to first map the current state and then used to identify sources of waste and to identify lean tools to try to eliminate this waste. The future state map is then developed for a system with lean tools applied to it. To quantify the benefits gained from using lean tools and techniques in the value stream mapping, a detailed simulation model is developed for ABS and a designed experiment is used to analyze the outputs of the simulation model for different lean configurations. Generalizations of the results are also provided

    Investigation of wind turbine flow and wake

    This paper is dedicated to the investigation and analysis of wind turbine wake. An experimental work is undertaken in wind tunnel on a horizontal axis wind turbine model. The velocity field in the wake is measured using PIV with phase synchronization in order to relate velocity and vortices to the rotating blades. The tip vortices are investigated in successive azimuthal positions of the rotor. A specially developed algorithm based on the circulation maximum detects the positions of the vortex cores and permits to use conditional averaging technique. The analysis of obtained velocity fields enables to determine the vortex core diameter, the swirl velocity distribution and the vortex diffusion as functions of the vortex age. The quality of obtained results permits to use them as reference for the validation of numerical computations

    On the Non-Coherent Wideband Multipath Fading Relay Channel

    We investigate the multipath fading relay channel in the limit of a large bandwidth, and in the non-coherent setting, where the channel state is unknown to all terminals, including the relay and the destination. We propose a hypergraph model of the wideband multipath fading relay channel, and show that its min-cut is achieved by a non-coherent peaky frequency binning scheme. The so-obtained lower bound on the capacity of the wideband multipath fading relay channel turns out to coincide with the block-Markov lower bound on the capacity of the wideband frequency-division Gaussian (FD-AWGN) relay channel. In certain cases, this achievable rate also meets the cut-set upper-bound, and thus reaches the capacity of the non-coherent wideband multipath fading relay channel.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, longer version (including proof) of the paper in Proc. of IEEE ISIT 201

    Investigation of relationship between drag and lift coefficients for a generic car model

    The paper presents a study of aerodynamic characteristics of a car, which has the simplified geometric shape, so called Ahmed body. Flow around the body and the influence of its rear slant angle on drag are widely studied by numerous researchers. However, small number of studies treats the relationship between drag and lift and this phenomenon is not fully understood. To clarify the relationship between lift and drag, experiments are conducted in the wind tunnel of ENSAM - Paris. The study is carried out for different rear slant angles in order to determine how the drag coefficient varies with lift. The results of experiments are completed by numerical simulations, which permit to obtain the detailed flow field around Ahmed body and to understand better the effect of rear slant angle on drag and lift coefficients
